The Amalfi Coast is close to Sorrento on the map, but visiting it well in one day is not quite as simple as it looks. Traffic can be slow, ferry schedules are seasonal, and Ravello sits high above the coast with no ferry connection.

I’m Italian and I’ve stayed in Sorrento on two separate trips, using it as a base to visit Positano and Amalfi. The biggest decision is not simply which tour has the best reviews. It is choosing between experiencing the coast mainly by land or mainly by boat.

Land tours are the better choice if Ravello matters to you. Boat tours usually focus on Positano and Amalfi, with the coastline itself, swimming, and time on the water becoming a major part of the day.Private tours cost more, but give you much more control over timing and stops.

Below, I’ve selected the best Amalfi Coast tours from Sorrento for different types of travelers, from small-group land trips to shared boat days and private experiences. I’ll also explain the tradeoffs, so you can quickly work out which format makes the most sense for your trip.

Best Amalfi Coast Tours from Sorrento at a Glance

If this is your first Amalfi Coast day from Sorrento, this small-group Positano, Amalfi, and Ravello tour is the option I would choose for most travelers. The group is capped at eight people, and you travel in an air-conditioned Mercedes van rather than a large bus.

The day covers all three classic stops. You get around one hour in Positano, one hour in Amalfi, and two hours in Ravello, with scenic photo stops along the coastal drive.

Having spent a lot of time around this part of the coast, I think the extra time in Ravello is one of the main reasons I like this itinerary. It has a very different feel from Positano and Amalfi, and I wouldn’t want to rush it.

Your English-speaking driver shares information along the way, but you explore each town independently rather than following a guide on a walking tour. In Amalfi, you can also add a short boat ride along the coast for an extra fee when weather conditions allow.

The main thing to know is that this tour uses a central Sorrento meeting point rather than hotel pickup. If door-to-door pickup matters more than keeping the group very small, Tour #3 or the private land tour may suit you better.

2. Best Land + Sea: Positano, Amalfi & Ravello Land + Sea Tour

This Positano, Amalfi, and Ravello land + sea tour is a smart middle ground if you want to experience the coast from both the road and the water. From April through October, the shared tour includes a boat transfer from Positano to Amalfi.

The shared itinerary normally gives you around 90 minutes in Positano, two hours in Amalfi, and about an hour in Ravello. The boat transfer itself takes roughly 25 minutes, so it works as transportation as well as a scenic part of the day.

There is also an optional 45-minute sightseeing boat ride for an extra fee. That optional cruise is different from the included seasonal Positano-to-Amalfi transfer.

Choose a Shared Tour option if the included seasonal boat transfer is important to you. The same Viator page also sells private versions, but the Positano-to-Amalfi boat transfer is not available on the private tours. From November through March, the shared itinerary stays on land and substitutes a different visit in Amalfi.

The included lunch comes with wine and water and typically includes bruschetta, a Caprese-style starter or ham and mozzarella, pasta, and lemon sorbet. I would choose this tour for the convenience of having pickup and lunch arranged, rather than specifically as a food experience.

A paid mini-cruise can also be added during the day. If your priority is maximizing town time rather than having lunch included, Tour #1 is a cleaner option.

4. Best Small-Group Boat Tour: Small-Group Positano & Amalfi Boat Tour

If the water is the main reason you are excited about the Amalfi Coast, this small-group Positano and Amalfi boat tour is my favorite shared boat option. The boat carries a maximum of 12 travelers and departs directly from Sorrento.

The route follows the Sorrento and Amalfi coasts past places such as Punta Campanella, Li Galli, and the Fiordo di Furore. You then get around 1.5 hours in Amalfi and two hours in Positano, plus a swim stopon the return journey.

Prosecco, beer, water, soft drinks, seasonal fruit, masks, a restroom, and an outdoor shower are included. There is a €10 per-person embarkation and assistance fee, while lunch and beach towels are not included.

This tour meets at Sorrento’s port rather than collecting you from your hotel. If pickup is important, the budget boat tour below includes Sorrento transfers, although it uses a much larger vessel.

5. Best Budget Boat Tour: Budget Amalfi & Positano Boat Tour

This shared Amalfi and Positano boat tour is the option I would look at if you want to keep the price lower without sacrificing time in Amalfi and Positano. Pickup is offered from Sorrento, followed by a transfer to Nerano, where you board the boat for the Amalfi Coast.

One of its biggest advantages is the amount of time you get ashore. The itinerary currently includes around three hours in Amalfi and two hours in Positano, giving you plenty of time to walk around, have lunch, shop, or simply enjoy the towns rather than rushing back to the boat.

The experience is on a larger shared boat rather than a small-group vessel, so it won’t feel as intimate as the tour above. But that is also what helps keep the price more accessible. Taxes, handling fees, and the fuel surcharge are included, while food and drinks are not.

I would not compare this directly with the max-12 boat above as if they were the same experience. Choose this one for value and town time. Choose Tour #4 if the smaller boat and more intimate atmosphere are worth paying more for.

6. Best Private Land Tour: Private Positano, Amalfi & Ravello Tour

If comfort and flexibility matter more than keeping the price low, this private Positano, Amalfi, and Ravello tour gives you your own vehicle and driver for the full day, with pickup from your Sorrento accommodation.

The standard route covers Positano, Amalfi, and Ravello, with scenic stops along the way. Because the tour is private, the driver can adjust the pace and itinerary, and help you decide where to spend more or less time rather than keeping everyone to a fixed group schedule.

This is a private driving and sightseeing day, not a private licensed walking guide in each town. Your driver provides commentary and local suggestions, then you explore the towns independently.

Tolls, parking, fuel, taxes, and bottled water are included. Lunch and attraction tickets are extra, which is not a major issue if you mainly want to wander the towns, but it is worth budgeting for if you plan to enter the villas in Ravello.

The published itinerary is unusually generous for a boat tour, with around two hours in Positano and two hours in Amalfi, plus cruising along the Sorrento and Amalfi coasts and time around places such as Ieranto and Li Galli. The skipper can also tailor the day around swimming and the conditions at sea.

Drinks, snacks, fruit, a sweet treat, beach towels, and a restroom are included. The major caveat is the fuel charge: Viator currently lists an additional €350 per booking.

This is the private option I would choose when having both Amalfi and Positano as proper land stops matters.
